What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses custom-made clear plastic aligners to straighten your teeth.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a digital treatment plan to map out the movements of your teeth that are needed. Our dentist then uses a series of specially designed aligners to follow this plan and gradually move your teeth into their correct positions over a period of time.

What are the benefits of Invisalign orthodontic treatment?

There are many benefits to Invisalign, including:

  • Aligners are made from clear plastic and are nearly invisible
  • Removable aligners — you can eat, drink, brush and floss normally
  • No metal brackets or wires
  • Aligners are custom-designed to be comfortable and to avoid breaking or irritating your mouth

Who is a candidate for Invisalign?

Anyone can be a candidate for Invisalign. This is an excellent treatment for both adults and teenagers, and continuing innovations make Invisalign a good option for nearly all common teeth-straightening and bite problems.

What is the treatment process with Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation. Once our dentist has evaluated your mouth and determined if you are a good candidate for Invisalign, she will map out the digital treatment plan and arrange for your aligners to be created. You will wear each set of aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day and will switch to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks as directed. You will meet with our dentist regularly throughout treatment to ensure that your teeth and smile are moving as planned.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of Invisalign is comparable to braces and will depend on how complex your case is and how many sets of aligners are needed. Most dental insurance providers will cover Invisalign treatment, and financial options are also available for your use.

How will Invisalign affect my lifestyle?

Invisalign is minimally invasive and designed to have as little impact on your day-to-day lifestyle as possible. Your aligners are nearly invisible as well as removable, which means that you can eat and drink anything you want and can brush and floss easily.

Is Invisalign painful?

No. You may feel some temporary discomfort for the first few days of wearing your aligners, but this should fade shortly. After your mouth and tongue have adjusted to having the aligners in your mouth, any discomfort or lisping will dissipate.

How do I take care of my aligners?

We recommend using the Invisalign Cleaning System to care for your aligners. You may also brush them with a toothbrush and rinse them in lukewarm water. Do not use hot water, as it will warp the plastic and ruin your aligners. Please do not chew gum or smoke while wearing the aligners. We also recommend that you do not eat or drink with the aligners in your mouth.

What if an aligner breaks?

If your aligner breaks or is lost, please contact our office immediately. We may order a replacement aligner or have you wear an aligner from your previous set or from your next set.

Can I still use Invisalign if I’ve had braces or other dental work done?

Yes. Many people are treated with a combination of braces and Invisalign, and a number of patients who have had braces in the past use Invisalign if their teeth shift out of their correct positions. You may also be able to receive Invisalign if you have veneers or crowns. Contact our office and make an appointment so that our dentist can evaluate your mouth and determine if Invisalign is a good option for you.

What happens when I finish treatment?

After you finish treatment, you will need to wear a retainer. Retainers keep your teeth in their correct positions to prevent regression and make your new smile permanent. We will provide you with instructions on wearing your retainer at the time that you receive it.
